What are Composite Fillings?

Commonly known as “white” fillings or “tooth-colored” fillings, composite tooth fillings are widely popular, favored for their ability to blend in which the natural tooth structure while restoring damage or decay.

Composite fillings are comprised of a tooth-colored resin that is placed inside the tooth to restore lost tooth structure. They were designed to replace traditional amalgam fillings, also known as “silver” fillings.

Composite tooth fillings are durable, and when properly cared for can last for decades before needing to be replaced.

Placement

In order to place a composite filling, your professional dentist in Ingleside will first numb the area to ensure that you feel no pain or discomfort.

They will then use a dental hand piece to remove all decay or damage inside the tooth. The tooth structure will then be built back up with composite material, which comes either in the form of a putty or a liquid. The composite is light-cured to ensure that it becomes hard, and then it is shaved down and rounded off to mimic the shape of the natural tooth and to ensure that your bite feels normal.

Caring for Composite Fillings

Of course, in the hours following your filling appointment, you will be a bit numb. You will be advised not to eat for a few hours and to avoid hard, sticky foods for the first day or so.

After this initial period, composite fillings do not require any additional visits or care; simply ensure that you are following through with proper home care, continue to avoid extremely hard or sticky candies whenever possible, and be sure to attend your check up and teeth cleaning appointments.
