Common Dental Issues That Effect Seniors

As the body ages, there are certain aspects of our health that we must invest a bit of extra time managing in order to keep ourselves happy and healthy. This is especially true when it comes to oral health; continue reading for a breakdown of common dental issues that commonly effect seniors and their respective treatment options.

Gum Disease

Known clinically as periodontal disease, gum disease is caused by bacteria and plaque that are not removed from the gums or surface of the teeth. When allowed to progress, gum disease can lead to recessed levels of bone and gums, which can cause the teeth to become loose, and in advanced cases, tooth loss can occur. Individuals with gum disease also commonly experience pain, swelling, and bleeding in the gums.

In order to treat gum disease, the patient will be recommended for “deep” cleanings, known as scaling and root planings, in which the entirety of the mouth, including below the gum line, is cleaned. The hygienist will then place antibiotics underneath the gumline in order to combat the growth of bacteria. With proper care, gum disease can be successfully managed and prevented from progressing.

Missing Teeth

Whether it is caused by gum disease or other factors, many seniors face the task of filling spaces in their smile caused by missing teeth. Options for missing teeth include dentures, dental implants, or bridges. The method of treatment is determined by a few different factors, including:

  • Bone density
  • Number of healthy teeth present in the mouth
  • Finances

If you are a senior and facing issues with your oral health, discuss your options with your dentist. He or she will help you design the best treatment method for you in order to help you maintain a healthy and happy smile. Palm Tree Dental is happy to offer comprehensive dental services to seniors.
